You need to read that in the English original! It is outstanding or hilarious (whatever you prefer) and absolutely entzückend.Für nicht-Muttersprachler ein wundervolles Lehrbuch über die Wesensunterschiede zwischen britischem und amerikanischem Englisch. Ein Einblick über die Lebensarten in den beiden Ländern nach dem 2. Weltkrieg. Eine Anleitung zum Briefeschreiben. Werde es der Englischlehrerin meines Sohnes als Schullektüre empfehlen.Ach ja, und natürlich liest es sich leicht und beschwingt - am besten an einem Abend, weil man es einfach nicht aus der Hand legen kann.
Zweifellos ein sehr interessantes Buch - ganz besonders die Auflösung zum Schluss. Manchmal waren die immer wiederkehrenden Briefe etwas langatmig. Insgesamt aber empfehlenswert.
Bei der Lektüre dieses kleinen Buches habe ich großen Anteilnahme an den Personen genommen und viel über die Nachkriegszeit in England gelernt. Die Lektüre hat mich von der ersten bis zur letzten Zeile gefesselt.
Ein entzückendes Buch. Lieber nicht den Film schauen, danach hat man so viele schöne Bilder im Kopf. Die englische Ausgabe hat auch den zweiten Teil, den es im Deutschen nicht mehr gibt.
Sehr reizend und unterhaltend auf angenehmen Niveau. Unterhaltend durch englischen Humor und gleichzeitg sehr aufschlussreich über die damalige Zeit. Lohnende Lektüre!
Dieses Buch kann man an einem Nachmittag durchlesen. Die Geschichte ist recht kurzweilig und unterhaltsam. Erinnert etwas an "Gut gegen Nordwind" allerdings bei weitem nicht so romantisch, sondern eher nüchtern und "brav" zu lesen.Das Buch beinhaltet außerdem noch einen Nachfolgeroman, der inhaltlich direkt an 85 Charing Cross Road anschließt.
I wish I could understand what it is about this book that has so delighted so many readers since it was first published in 1971 and how it provided enough material to make it into several films and a play.An American playwright, Marc Connelly, at the time even went so far as to write a fan letter to the author, gushing that : “84, Charing Cross Road†is tender and funny and incandescent and beautiful and MAKES THE READER REJOICE TO BE LIVING IN THE SAME CENTURY WITH YOU.†??? The century of Willa Cather, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck and even Mark Twain until 1910 (to name just a few American literary figures) ??? Talk about going overboard - which makes me wonder if I’ve read the wrong book.I can appreciate that Helene Hanff, “born in the U.S. with a yearning love of classical scholarship and no college education†had a most impressive and unusual reading list and I can share the nostalgia regarding the old pre-amazon days when business transactions were so much more personal and based on trust.But the correspondence itself ?? The letters are all rather short and not particularly personal (apart from the news of Frank Doel’s death), considering that they stretch over a period of more than twenty years. She orders books and they send them, she, generous soul, sends parcels and they thank her, someone moves house, someone gets sick, someone buys a car, someone leaves the office, someone moves to a nursing home … The British bookshop people tend to be very polite and a bit formal while Hanff is direct, outspoken and witty in a gruff sort of way.Ms Hanff never makes it to London until the bookshop is closed and her friends by correspondence have died or moved away, but when she finally does, she is adored, applauded, interviewed, filmed, fêted, fan-mailed, pampered, painted, invited to country homes and posh restaurants and taken around London, Oxford, Stratford-on-Avon, the Cotswalds etc. She loves every minute of it, revels in all the attention, visits all the sights she’s ever dreamtof, hobnobs with the rich and famous, compares London with New York, Britain with the US and talks a lot about herself - all this in the second part of my edition called “The Duchess of Bloomsbury†which I actually enjoyed more for the places she visits and (some of) the people she meets and because it’s funnier.
